In natural medicine, kava kava is distinguished as a remedy for reducing anxiety. Kava, also known as "kava kava", is an herbal supplement obtained from the roots of Piper methysticum, from the South Pacific islands. These belong to the Solanaceae family of plants and are distinguished by their anxiolytic properties.
The kavapirones present in kava kava exert an effect similar to that produced by alcohol on the brain. In this way, a state of relaxation and well-being is caused. In turn, it mitigates pain and reduces muscle tension.
In natural medicine, kava kava is used as an adjuvant to reduce anxiety. Its active compound, kavalactone, appears to stimulate the activity of feel-good neurotransmitters. In particular, it activates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which affects the nerves.
Regarding this, research in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology reported that standardized kava has positive short-term effects in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Traditionally, kava kava has also been a supplement to combat sleep problems. Still, most studies regarding its use in insomnia are limited to observations in animals. A type of kavalactone, called kevain, would be responsible for this effect.
Other lesser-known uses of kava kava have to do with pain relief and tumor prevention. A study in Neural Regeneration Research determined that kavalactones decrease neuronal damage and pain sensations.
Kava is absorbed through the intestine and reaches its maximum effect approximately 2 hours after ingestion. The effects of kava depend on how much you eat, how quickly you eat it, whether you have eaten, your size and weight, your general health, and how often you use it. It may also depend on how healthy your liver is. We strongly recommend starting with a dose of 1 capsule (500 mg) per day for the first few days, especially if you have not used Kava before to see how your body reacts. Then move up to the full dosage of 2 capsules a day, but you may find that 1 capsule per day is enough for you.
Warning:
Kava kava can increase the effect of alcohol and certain medications used to treat anxiety and depression. YOU SHOULD NOT USE KAVA KAVA IF YOU HAVE LIVER CONDITIONS OR ARE TAKING MEDICATIONS PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR CHARACTERIZED AS CONTROLLED ((DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING))
